Vehicle Donation FAQ
Why should I donate my vehicle instead of sell?
Today’s car market is flooded with used cars which has depressed prices and decreased trade in value for used cars. Vehicle donation to the Good Neighbor Garage provides tax saving and a warm-fuzzy feeling for directly impacting a life in the Denver community with a car.
Why should I donate to the GNG and not to another organization accepting car donations?
Cars donated to the GNG directly impact lives in the Denver community through our repair and car placement program. Disadvantaged individuals that qualify for our program will receive one of our cars to help them better support their family through work. Many other charities wholesale the car to other dealers or salvage the car and sell the parts to support the nonprofit’s charitable activities.
How do I determine the market value of my car?
Visit the websites for NADA, Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds websites to start the process of determining the value of your car. Subtract out the cost of repairs to make the car safe to obtain an estimate of the cars value. For additional assistance, you might want to consult a tax accountant or read IRS Form 8283, “Noncash Charitable Contributions” and Publication 561, “Determining the Value of Donated Property.”
What if my car is worth $5,000 or more?
A car with a value greater than $5000 must be appraised by a dealership that fills out IRS Form 8282.
How do I get my car to you?

What are the benefits of donating a car?
Tax deduction benefits include Federal Tax Deduction, State Tax Deduction and Enterprise Zone State tax credits.
Unlike many vehicle donation services or charities, the tax law favors car donations to Good Neighbor Garage. GNG is one, if not the only non-profit in the Colorado area that can maximize your deduction by allowing you to claim the full fair market value of your car. This is possible because your donated car is refurbished and sold to a low income family for a minimal fee. For example, if you donate a ’99 Toyota Camry to us, you may be able to deduct as much as $4,400. However, if you donate the same car to another non-profit that does not fit the criteria, your deduction would be significantly less! (please note that not all cars qualify for the GNG deduction)
Along with tax deduction benefits your donation positively impacts families by providing transportation, which helps keep them working. One of the chief advantages of donating cars to the Good Neighbor Garage is that these cars remain in our community, directly impacting lives by being provided to a real low-income family working for a better future. Research evaluated by the National Economic Development and Law Center and the Ann E. Casey Foundation in the guide, Shifting Into Gear, shows that car ownership by low-income individuals results in more hours worked, increased earnings, as well as a decrease in dependency on welfare programs.
